“Why we loved living at 124 Corbett Avenue”
We loved this house from the moment we saw it, and the experience of living here has proven to be even more wonderful than we’d imagined when we first moved in 29 years ago. In fact, if we weren’t leaving San Francisco, we would never want to move.
The house is a perfect combination of quirk, charm, and livability. Its distinctive footprint and almost complete lack of 90-degree angles give it a unique feel that continues to constantly surprise and delight even after all these years. The hardwood floors, brick fireplace and flow of the light-filled rooms lend a cozy warmth. The extensive glass doors and windows on the north side provide immediate access to nature, turning the back garden into a virtual outdoor room and making the home feel both like a private oasis away from the City and larger than it actually is.
When we had the house renovated by eminent architect Ross Levy in 2008, our remit to him was to retain its unique character while slightly expanding the footprint to allow for a more spacious kitchen and primary bedroom. At the same time, we increased the expanse of glass windows in the back, updated the finishes and completely replaced all plumbing and electrical systems. The end result was the house of our dreams, with a beautifully functional kitchen, a primary bedroom that makes it feel like you’re waking up every morning surrounded by nature, and colorful tile accents throughout, including custom Murano glass in the downstairs bath.
For livability, the location of 124 Corbett simply cannot be beat. It is only a short walk to the vibrant Castro scene, yet far enough removed from it to be relatively quiet and safe and to retain a distinctive neighborhood feel. Shops and services, including a grocery store, post office, drugstore, four gyms, numerous restaurants, and coffee shops, plus Cliff’s Variety (a real lifesaver!) and the historic Castro Theatre are within 7 minutes by foot. The MUNI Metro provides quick and easy access to the Civic Center, downtown, and the Embarcadero, as well as Stonestown, SF State, City College, and destinations to the west. An array of urban walks in the Immediate area includes Corona Heights, Buena Vista Park, Kite Hill, and Tank Hill, offering spectacular views over the City, Bay, and ocean. For slightly more rigorous exercise, three of the famous San Francisco urban stairways (the Pemberton, Saturn, and Vulcan Steps) are all close by.
The lower Corbett area also has one of the best microclimates in the City. Because it lays just below the fog line, it often remains sunny when the rest of the City is shrouded in gloom during the summer, and yet is close enough to Twin Peaks to benefit from the City’s “natural air-conditioning” on warmer days. As an added bonus, the 100 block of Corbett is one of the few places left in San Francisco where street parking is readilyavailable. Your family and friends will thank you for that when they come to visit!

Just south of Buena Vista Park and west of the Duboce Triangle is the small affluent neighborhood of Corona Heights. Many streets are narrow, steep, quiet and quaint while 17th Street and Market Street come alive with traffic and commerce.
The architecture runs the gamut from fine Victorians to modern masterpieces. The Randall Museum, located on Museum Way, focuses on arts, crafts, sciences and natural history geared toward children. It has been home for the Golden Gate Model Rail Road Club since 1961. The nearby neighborhoods of the Castro, Haight Ashbury and Cole Valley offer great shopping and dining opportunities, and public transportation is excellent.
